In five decades of planning, the social welfare services were aimed at the welfare and the development of children, women and the physically and socially handicapped of the society. Social service is not confined to isolated deeds and words of charity towards the disabled, helpless or the poverty stricken. Doctors can serve by attending to the ailing without being influenced by thoughts of pecuniary gains. Engineers and contractors can serve humanity by doing their jobs efficiently and diligently, without being clouded by greed.
Businessmen can do social service if they pursue their work honestly as a vocation. Public servants will be of great service to humanity if the evils of corruption and aimless drift are rooted out and replaced with the seeds of the true spirit of service nurtured by good ethics and strong human values.
Politicians can serve by substituting integrity and patriotism for acts of self- preservation. So, for doing social service the only thing which is important is the strong will to do something for the betterment of the society.
Programmes are being implemented for the early detection and treatment, education, training and rehabilitation of disabled persons, namely, the blind, the deaf, the orthopedically handicapped, the mentally retarded, spastics and the leprosy cured persons.
Social welfare measures at the Government level touch only a fringe of the problem. It is not possible for the Government to reach out to every person who needs help. In view of the illiteracy, ignorance, superstitions and social evils prevalent in our country, the need for social service has assumed a certain urgency.
Of course, social service cannot be a whole time activity. It is indeed enough if people with missionary zeal devote 2 or 3 hours a day for social service.
Students can take to social service during their summer vacations. Similarly, retired persons can be of great help. They too can volunteer for social service. Social service develops a spirit of brotherhood between man and man.
The main mission of students is to study diligently. But if they can spare some time, they should render some social service according to their capacity and inclination.
The field of social service is very wide: In the field of social service, students can do a wonderful job. Students can make the literacy campaign successful. They can offer their services to the Adult Education class of their locality. If there is no such class, they should open such a class or should teach some of their neighbors.
Fortunately, students have ample time for social service. There are summer vacation, the winter holidays in which students almost remain idle. Sanitation is another sphere in which students can do something. Social service is a voluntary work and one cannot be compelled to do a work. Social service fulfills two conditions. It helps one to utilise the leisure hours and the society gets benefited by it. The value of social service should be taught to students to create inspiration in them.
They should be enthused to pay their utmost strength and service to the society to make their existence meaningful. Students should be taught how to serve the people of their country. They may teach reading, writing and arithmetic to the vast majority of illiterate Indians.
They may render service to the members of the society in their time of need. They may relieve the suffering of the masses by nursing the sick. Spreading education is no mean service. They can make the illiterate masses aware of their rights and duties. Once zeal is created amongst the students illiteracy may be wiped out. The Government cannot fulfill the ambitions of the vast mass of people.
Field for social service: There is a large field for social service. One can serve the society to his heart’s content. We can help the poor, the needy, the crippled and the handicapped. This is social service. We can teach reading and writing to the illiterate people. We can try to bring about prohibition.
